Google Reveals Winners of Android Challenge
Nearly a year after it was first announced, Google has finally revealed the winners of the $10 million Android Developers Challenge — but not before becoming ensnared in controversy over the distribution of the platform's software development kit.
The winners, who were announced in a posting on the Android development site, have been working busily — and in some cases, under non-disclosure agreements — since May, when the finalists were revealed. Among the winners are ten $100,000 winners and ten $275,000 winners, all of whom will see their applications go on to be distributed through the recently-announced Android Market.
The announcement comes just weeks after Google came under fire for their response to outraged Android developers who petitioned for the general release of software development kits being provided to contest teams under nondisclosure terms. The controversy was finally resolved with the release of the updated SDK mid-month.
