Getting Paid To Dump Windows
on October 29, 2007
A user in Italy has managed to find the way to make it pay to give Windows the boot.
The user purchased a Compaq system with XP and Microsoft Works pre-installed. However, he didn't want either. So he asked HP for a refund (HP owns the Compaq brand). The computer giant tried to avoid it, but the EULA was clear: if you don't accept the license, you're entitled to return the product for a refund.
The matter went all the way to the courts, which sided with the user. HP was ordered to pay a total of €140 in refunds for the two programs. The only way it could have been better was if it'd been ruled defective by design.
