Fun is to be had at Linux Journal this week! Linode is sponsoring Daily Giveaways all week long!

Monday's giveaway is an ODROID-GO Game Kit. One randomly drawn winner will be chosen from all Monday entrants received before 11:59pm PDT / 6:59am GMT. The winner will be announced tomorrow. Come back Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and so forth for more fun giveaways!

The ODROID-GO Game Kit includes a special ODROID anniversary board with all the parts to put together your own game kit and see the workings behind such a device. It is not only a fun assembly project but also an educational tool to learn about all the hardware and software that goes into building such a device. Editor Kyle Rankin compares Adafruit's PiGRRL Zero vs. Hardkernel's ODROID-GO in this month's issue of Linux Journal -- make sure to check it out!

A special thanks to Linode who offers high performance SSD Linux servers for all of your infrastructure needs. We use Linode cloud hosting ourselves and so do many of our developer friends. Consider supporting Linode the way they support our Linux Journal community. Thanks again friends at Linode!

by Shawn Powers

While not everyone can get gifts as awesome as my 512MB High School Musical MP3 player, we all have thoughtful relatives that try to get us geeky gifts. Sometimes they do well (especially if they stick to the Amazon Wish Lists we create), but sometimes they do poorly. I'll leave it up to you to decide which way my Mix-Stick leans.

In true holiday spirit, we figured misery loves company. We want to see your worst tech-related gift this year. Perhaps you got an 8-Track player. Maybe a battery powered pasta sorter. We all get horrible tech gifts this time of year. Heck, maybe someone gave you a Windows 7 phone. Whatever your worst tech gift is this season, we want to see it.

Attach a link to a photo or video of your tackiest, most pointless, completely age inappropriate gift in the comment section. The Linux Journal staff will pick the best of the worst, and send that person a special gift pack filled with stuff around the office. You'll probably get stickers, a t-shirt, old tea bags, partially consumed mouse pads, you know -- the stuff you'd find in any geeky magazine office. :)

You have all week to submit your photos and videos, we'll be picking a winner next year. (I love those "next year" jokes this time of year, heheheh) So polish up that hand-crank-generator-camera, and take some photos or videos of your aw{ful|some} gifts in action.

(Oh, and yes -- the MP3 player really is mine.)

Unless is really big or something." typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" />

by Shawn Powers

Before anyone shows me something we'll both regret, let me clarify I'm strictly talking about desktop screenshots. :)

Our Desktop issue of Linux Journal is coming up, and we thought it would be fun to have a desktop contest! Is your desktop awesome? Is it super functional? Insanely spartan? Just green text on a black background? Made from the shorn fur of a thousand puppies?

As you can see in the screenshot below, my desktop isn't anything special. I have the applications I need in the task bar, and keep most of the things you see open all the time. When it comes to work, most of it ends up being done in a terminal window or word processor. (My jobs are non-stop excitement)

If I were editing a video, you'd see kdenlive running on a second virtual screen. Apart from that, what you see is what you get. I'm pretty boring.

(Click To Embiggenate)

But we know YOU aren't boring! Show us your desktop, and we'll pick our favorite. That screenshot, along with information on who owns it, will be printed in our February issue.

What makes a desktop winning material? You tell us! Why should your desktop be immortalized in the February issue of Linux Journal? Just remember, your editorial staff full of family friendly folks. Well, for the most part anyway. If my wife steps into my office and finds me sorting through desktop photos of hardcore pornography, let's just say we all lose. Me especially! (So keep it family friendly, for my kid's sake)

Oh, also HURRY! This contest is only open until Monday, November 15th. If you're the sort of person that would like to win a contest, you only have a few days to fabricate the perfect desktop. If you're honest, like my pathetic screenshot above will attest to, it should be plenty of time to take a simple screenshot.

We are looking forward to seeing your screenshots. Hopefully we get lots of entries, because if my screenshot is the only option, it will make for a sad winner's circle in our magazine. :)
